Is it a good idea to remortgage?

There’s a chance you’re paying more for your mortgage than you need to. Refinancing or fixing your interest rate again could be beneficial, but a lower interest rate doesn’t automatically mean that refinancing is worthwhile.

Is refinancing worth it?

When refinancing your mortgage, you should take the following into account, amongst other things:

  • your current mortgage and interest rate;
  • the fixed-rate period;
  • early repayment charges;
  • how long you intend to stay in your current home, or whether moving house is also an option?

We’ll work out the figures for your mortgage, including any associated costs, so you can see whether it makes sense in your case.

Do the benefits outweigh the costs?

Ultimately, the question is: do the benefits outweigh the costs? We’ll look at your current mortgage and your options. We’ll work out what refinancing will cost you and what it will save you. That way, you’ll know whether it’s worth refinancing your mortgage. If it doesn’t save you anything, we’ll tell you that too. Make an appointment.

FAQ on refinancing a mortgage

Will I have to pay a penalty if I remortgage?

If you refinance your mortgage before the end of the fixed-rate period, the lender may charge an early repayment fee. The amount of this fee depends, amongst other things, on your current interest rate, the remaining fixed-rate period and the terms of your mortgage.

Will I have money left over each month if I refinance?

That could be the case. That is, of course, generally the main reason for remortgaging. But lower monthly repayments don’t tell the whole story. There are also costs involved in remortgaging. That’s why we look at the full picture.

Can I refinance my mortgage with my current bank?

Yes. Refinancing does not automatically mean you have to switch to another lender. Sometimes you can also adjust your mortgage with your current bank. Which option is most financially advantageous depends on the terms and costs.

Would you like specific advice during the first meeting? If so, it would be helpful if you could bring your payslip, a statement of your savings, a list of your loans, etc., or send them to us in advance.
If you’d like, we can set up your account on the client portal in advance so you can upload documents. Please let us know when you book your appointment, and we’ll create an account for you.
